Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine

Originating in China over 3,500 years ago, acupuncture has recently gained in popularity in the U.S. as people seek more holistic healthcare. The focus of an acupuncture treatment is to restore the balance of Qi in the body. Any illness or disease can be defined as the imbalance of this energy or Qi. The insertion of hair-thin, sterile, stainless needles along specific points on the body helps to balance the flow of Qi and return the body to a healthy state. When the points are stimulated, the flow of Qi through pathways of energy (meridians) is facilitated, thereby initiating your body’s return to balance.

Though you may be seeking treatment to help relieve such imbalances as pain, digestive upset, or infertility, during your visit, you will also receive the added benefit of a deeply relaxed state that is unique to receiving acupuncture.

Acupuncture is very safe and free of side effects. Most people find the treatment relaxing and the needle insertion painless. The small diameter and contoured shape of the needle allow it to be inserted easily and painlessly.

The number of treatments varies depending on how well you respond. The average is about 6 treatments during the first month and then once or twice a month for the next few months. Some people, however, respond very well and only need a few treatments.

Chinese herbs are often used to complement acupuncture treatments. We use custom formulas to specifically address the issues of each patient. The use of a Chinese herbal formula can sustain the effects of an acupuncture treatment in between visits, and is a great way to supplement one’s path toward wellness.

Acupuncture, Women’s Health, & Fertility, with Jennifer Johnson

Jennifer JohnsonWomen of all ages can benefit from acupuncture. For young women beginning to menstruate, acupuncture can ease PMS, cramps and mood swings. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help treat other symptoms associated with PMS such as headaches, dizziness and irritability. Endometriosis and fibroids are also commonly treated with acupuncture and herbs. For pregnant women, acupuncture and Chinese herbs are a gentle, prescription-free option for treating many issues during pregnancy including morning sickness, abdominal pain, constipation and post-partum depression. Much help can be found by treating infertility issues with acupuncture. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can also help during the wondrous but sometimes uncomfortable transition of menopause. Treatment can relieve the discomfort of hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia.

As the popularity and success of acupuncture treatment for fertility becomes more widespread, more people are looking to Chinese medicine and acupuncture to treat infertility.

While infertility may appear to be the main issue it is actually a manifestation of a deeper underlying imbalance. Acupuncture and/or herbal medicine treatments, will start working right away to get your body back to its optimum balance and ready for conception. Whether you are trying on your own or involved in an IVF cycle, the overall goal of treatment is to prepare the body for conception and a healthy, full term pregnancy.

In a recent article, Prevention magazine published a review by researchers at the Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York on acupuncture’s effect on female fertility. They found that acupuncture helps to:

  • Regulate hormones and ovulation
  • Improve ovarian function – more follicles and better quality eggs
  • Increase blood flow to the uterus – improve chances of implantation
  • Regulate menstrual cycle
  • Reduce stress, anxiety and promote relaxation

Acupuncture treatments can be especially beneficial to women undergoing modern fertility treatments such as IUI, IVF and donor cycles. Numerous studies have shown acupuncture treatments to increase the rate of pregnancy in women undergoing IVF treatments.

Above all, the best thing about acupuncture is that there are no side effects. In fact, acupuncture will help to reduce any side effects you might be experiencing with IVF. Wherever you are on the path to pregnancy, acupuncture can help increase your chances of becoming pregnant.

Fertility Treatment Plan

  • Acupuncture treatments – schedule determined by your cycle
  • Dietary recommendations
  • Lifestyle suggestions
  • Chinese herbs – as needed

Start acupuncture treatments up to 3 months before you try to conceive. Women’s follicles are recruited about 3 months before being chosen for ovulation. The quality of the egg is influenced during this 3-month period, so acupuncture treatments today will affect the quality of your eggs up to 3 months from now.

If you are currently in an IVF cycle or are planning an IVF cycle: Acupuncture treatments are scheduled according to where you are in the cycle. The acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas are designed to complement the IVF cycle and reduce any side effects.

Start treatments a least one month before your scheduled transfer date. Starting treatment early gives your body a chance to develop healthier eggs.

Jennifer Johnson Acupuncture Testimonials

“I came to Jennifer after suffering a miscarriage, followed by a two year struggle to conceive a second child. Fertility drugs had not worked and left lingering side effects. I was hopeful, but I never thought my life would be impacted the way it has by Jennifer. When receiving an acupuncture treatment I feel energy rushing through my body. Afterwards, I feel energized mentally, yet completely relaxed physically. After only six weeks of seeing Jennifer, I was pregnant. On top of that, I felt relief from stress and anxiety, something that I had not felt in years. I believe that my pregnancy, delivery and daughter all benefited from my body being in a better place due to acupuncture. Truly amazing!”
– Heather

“I came to see Jennifer two years into our struggle with infertility as a referral from a friend at work. Starting acupuncture with her was the first thing I did right in our journey. Jennifer immediately made me feel like I had control of our situation and for the first time in a long time made me feel hopeful that I could achieve a healthy pregnancy. Almost immediately I could tell a difference in my body and through charting could a see a huge difference in the regularity of my cycles. We struggled with multiple factor infertility and eventually moved on to IVF. I saw Jennifer through my IVF cycle and are happy to say that we are pregnant with twins after our first round! Although we needed additional help to achieve pregnancy, Jennifer was an important part of our journey both mentally and physically and we are so grateful to have found her!”
– Jeanne W.

“I’ve been seeing Jennifer for infertility related treatments sporadically over the past 4-1/2 years. After meeting with her for the first time I finally felt like I was being heard because the symptoms we discussed were unlike any my Ob-Gyn had ever questioned. As a newbie to Traditional Chinese Medicine I had several ‘Ah Ha!’ moments those first few months.

I like that the treatments are painless, relaxing, non-invasive and have an added benefit of aiding in restful sleep. Acupuncture has been an excuse for me to put positive intention into something that most of the time is challenging. There are so many difficult aspects to infertility that are painful, both physically and emotionally, so I’m relieved that I’ve found a method that makes getting through the journey more pleasant. Jennifer’s compassion and gentle approach makes me feel cared for not just as a client but also as a friend.

Within the first month of treatment I started to notice subtle changes in my cycle. After a few months of treatments and the addition of herbs, I really started to see my body responding in a positive way. When I started treatments we had been trying to conceive on our own for two years and already had a male-factor diagnosis and although I remained undiagnosed, I suspected my body also wasn’t cooperating. It took six months of acupuncture treatments (for me) before I got pregnant the first time. I had no morning sickness and enjoyed a relatively uneventful pregnancy. I honestly believe that acupuncture was one of the major contributions to helping us conceive naturally and I tell this to anyone who will listen. A subsequent pregnancy followed after another six months of treatments which I started when my first son turned one. The pregnancy with my second son sadly ended at 16 weeks. Now after a yearlong hiatus to take care of an unrelated health issue, we are back on the bandwagon trying to add to our family yet again.

Acupuncture has become so much more for me than just trying to build our family. I’ve seen some of its many benefits and I’m sure my treatments for infertility have only scratched the surface of what it has to offer.”
– Amy G.

“My husband and I had been trying to have a baby for a couple of years. I had experienced three early miscarriages (prior to 8 weeks)–the last of which was following our first IVF cycle. I began seeing Jennifer about two months prior to beginning IVF round #2. I am now (very happily) 14 weeks pregnant, and I firmly believe that my weekly sessions with Jennifer were the key component in allowing both my mind and body to sustain and support this healthy pregnancy. Along the way, I had my doubts and fears, but Jennifer’s experience, and calm and positive energy always reassured me and made me believe that a healthy pregnancy was, in fact, possible. I would highly recommend her to any woman facing fertility issues or those that are considering or beginning fertility procedures such as IVF.”
– Laurel L.

“Jennifer was amazing, she was able to help me better understand my body and explained how acupuncture would complement other medical treatments. After seeing her for three months I became pregnant, and I really believe it was with her help that I was able to sustain the pregnancy, which led to a healthy baby girl. I love Jennifer and if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have my daughter.”
– Nadia F.

“Acupuncture improved my digestive system in a big way. I was at a point where I wasn’t sure where to go next with my stomach troubles. Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, and Jennifer’s knowledge and care really made a difference in my health and life.”
– Beth G.

“Initially, the thought of being poked with a bunch of needles scared me but Jennifer introduced me to them quite gently (they really don’t hurt!). Jennifer brings a great deal of expertise to her practice which is balanced by her sensible approach to treatment. After seeing how well her treatments worked with western medicine, I whole-heartedly recommend doing acupuncture with Jennifer as an important adjunct to treating your ailments.”
– Christine C.

“My experience with Jennifer Johnson has made a huge impact on my overall health. With her guidance I have been able to manage my anxiety and depression issues in a holistic manner. Jennifer is incredibly thoughtful and approachable regardless of the concerns I bring to her attention. She truly is a blessing!”
– Jennifer B.

“My energy immediately increased after just 1 session with Jennifer. I felt revived and less restless at night as well. I was able to discontinue the medication I was taking for anxiety and depression. I now continue to go back for the relaxation and energy benefits.”
– Liz H.

“Acupuncture with Jennifer has been an amazing experience. I have never felt better and more in tune with my body than after an acupuncture session with Jennifer. I started seeing Jennifer because my eating habits and cravings were erratic. Now I have cravings for foods that are nutritious and healthy. Acupuncture has helped my body’s natural healing to be in balance.”
– Laurie B.

“I started going to Jennifer when I was trying to get pregnant, what I didn’t know was that there would be so many added benefits from acupuncture. Not only did I get pregnant, but I was able for the first time to get my migraines under control and for the most part I have been completely headache free! I really appreciate the time Jennifer takes to talk at the beginning of each session. I always felt like she was as interested in my success and improved health as I was!”
– Alexis K.

“Ten years of infertility and increasingly invasive medical tests left us depleted and disappointed, with no conclusive medical diagnosis and the prediction that we had less than 5% chances of conception without the help of IVF. We just didn’t have the energy left to submit to the challenges and additional medical inquest of IVF. After only three months of weekly acupuncture treatments for Dana and daily herbs for Dan, we were shocked at the news that we were finally pregnant. Jennifer’s entire treatment plan was deeply humanizing, emotionally supportive, and personally validating on so many levels. We now await our child’s arrival in the next 1-3 weeks following an incredibly easy and very healthful pregnancy.”
– Dana J.

“I sought out Jennifer to find acupuncture support for my IVF process after a long and difficult fertility journey. I was a little apprehensive about acupuncture, but Jennifer’s knowledgeable and comforting manner put me at ease right away. The sessions were painless and quite relaxing! And, I was thrilled to learn that my IVF procedures went well and led to a successful pregnancy. I am due to give birth any day now to my first child…I would recommend Jennifer to any woman who is looking for support during her fertility process.”
– Sarah F.

“I have to admit that at first I was very skeptical, but every book I read recommended it so I gave it a try. Jennifer gave a practical meaning to what we were trying to accomplish and this helped me to understand and to feel very comfortable immediately. Within a couple of weeks I was actually looking forward to our sessions as I felt so great leaving each time. I firmly believe she played a big part in the success of my IVF procedure.”
– Carrie P.

“I started receiving acupuncture 1x/week 3-4 months prior to my 3rd IVF cycle. After 7 IUI’s and 2 IVF’s I looked into acupuncture to compliment my 3rd IVF cycle. It was a very relaxing experience for me and I looked forward to my visits. Well it must have helped me as my third IVF cycle was a charm and resulted in pregnancy.”
– Tracy M.

“My acupuncture sessions with Jennifer were something I looked forward to each week! I left feeling relaxed, calm and balanced. I was a chronic headache sufferer and was also struggling with infertility. Now, I rarely get a headache and am expecting a baby boy in December! I would recommend treatment from Jennifer to anyone.”
– Teresa B.

“After completing 5 unsuccessful cycles of IUI; IVF was our only remaining option. After reading many articles about how acupuncture can increase the chance of success in an IVF cycle by 65%, I decided to try it. Acupuncture not only eliminated the many side effects of the medications and reduce my stress throughout the treatment cycle, but also helped with other day to day ailments. We retrieved 7 eggs and all 7 fertilized! We also had very high quality embryos, so good that my doctor said he had a hard time distinguishing which embryos were the best! Now we are blessed to be expecting twin thanks to Jennifer’s help.”
– Amanda W.

“My husband and I were diagnosed with unexplained infertility and after three failed IUI tries and one failed IVF treatment for infertility I went to Jennifer for help. I started acupuncture with Jennifer several weeks prior to my second round of IVF and kept it up through the cycle. During the second IVF cycle my body responded better to the medication prescribed by my doctor, I didn’t feel nearly as sick as I did the first time around and we are now expecting a new baby!! As an added bonus I escaped the extreme morning sickness that is prevalent in my family.”
– Margaret H.

“For any women struggling to get pregnant, I would absolutely recommend acupuncture with Jennifer Johnson. As someone with PCOS I always knew there was a chance that I might not be able to get pregnant. My husband and I had been trying off and on for a few years when someone recommended that we try acupuncture, so we decided to give it a try. In addition to acupuncture I was also taking clomid. After doing both for more than six months, Jennifer suggested that I try going off the clomid and just doing acupuncture. I was nervous about doing this, but she and my doctor agreed that it was worth a try. And if it didn’t work within a few months, my doctor would be suggesting that I start looking into IVF. So we took a chance, and I went off clomid. And the first month (THE FIRST MONTH!) off clomid, with only acupuncture, was the month I finally got pregnant. It was amazing. I’d always thought if I could have one baby, I’d like to have two eventually, but feared that because I’m nearly 40 years old, and this journey has been so hard and long, that I wouldn’t get the chance. Now I believe that when I’m ready for a second child, if needed, I will be able to skip the medication and just use acupuncture to get pregnant again. I absolutely owe this gift of life to Jennifer and her skills as an acupuncturist.”
